The Genius of Synecdoche New York Part 3
YMS Alright, so I definitely didn't expectyou guys to be waiting this long for Part 3. So, although it was unintentional, atleast for this film it was a little appropriate. Actor When are we gonna get an audience in hereéIt's been 17 years. YMS So where we left off last time, Caden had received his MacArthur grant, and was just starting to come up with ideas for what he wanted to do. He grabs his crew together, and explains exactlywhat he aims to accomplish with this theater piece. Caden I've been think a lot about dying lately. Claire You're gonna be fine, sweetie. Caden I appreciate that, Claire. Claire You are, you poor thing. Caden Regardless of how this particular thing works itself out, I will be dying,
and so will you, and so will everyone here,Clears throat and that's what I wanna explore. YMS His obsession with death is now going to be reflected in his art. So in the same way that his theater piece will be a reflection of himself, this film is a reflection of Charlie Kaufman. It's no coincidence that every time we see a television,we get a glimpse into Caden's mind. This film is art imitating life imitating art imitating life, and so on, and it's about to get a hell of a lot more complicated as it goes on. The scene ends with Claire basically gushing over his theater concept,
YMS and it's this sense of admiration and validation that, as we can imagine,he's always wanted out of Adele. Just remember how heartbroken he was when she said shewouldn't be able to make the opening night show. This is implied even further as the very next scene shows him waiting for her on a date, and wouldn't you know it, the song playing at the bar is the one that I briefly mentioned earlier. Not only is the title of the song called 'Song for Caden',but the lyrics perfectly describe exactly what he's going through, and it's important to remember that his experience is supposed to represent everyone's. So Claire shows up, and runs into Hazel, who Caden did not expect to be there. They have a really awkward and uncomfortable quot;Helloquot; before returning to their separate tables:
Hazel Hi, Caden. Caden Hi, Hazel. Hi, Claire. Claire Hey. Hazel This is Derek. Caden Hi, Derek. Claire Hi, Derek. Hazel, seductively Hi, Derek. Derek Hi. Caden laughs nervously YMS One of the ideas that the film represents is that we're all playing characters. So, this next line not only fits with that, but also with the recurring theme of miscommunication: Claire So, could you tell me maybe what it is that you want from meé Caden Hmmé Claire Y'know, like from my character. Caden Oh, ah, mmm, well, we'll build it over time together, y'know, try to find a real person, maybe, to model it afteré YMS Later in the film the characters literally wind up playing versions of themselves,
and not only does it get a lot more difficult to distinguish between their quote unquote quot;charactersquot; and their quote unquote quot;real selvesquot;, but we start to see changes in our maincharacter that imply that the concept of identity isn't exactly as concrete as we'd think. On their way back, Claire tells Caden that her mother died last night. The next scene we see is Caden accompanying her to her mother's funeral. Caden's stalker Sammy can be seen here as well. You can see him leanforward to listen as soon as the characters start whispering to each other. Priest Claire Elizabeth Keen was a joyous child, the apple of her mother's eye. Caden, whispering I'm sorry. YMS Now, notice how the monologue about Claire's childhood continues over this scene: Priest When she was seven, little Claire was bitten by the acting bug.
YMS As a character in this film we've only known her as an adult, so thatcontrast serves as a reminder that every person you meet has a storymuch larger than the moments you've witnessed personally. Every adult you meet was, at one point, just a little baby. So now time jumps forward quite a bit. YMS Not only is that line particularly relevant to the characters, but it's alsorelevant how quickly it cuts to this shot, where we see that Caden is stillconsumed over the disappearance of his family. It's important to note that Adele's last name is Lack, and for the majority of thefilm, Caden laments over how she's missing from his life. The name Claire comes from a French and Latin origin meaning quot;clearquot;, and I think that that's relevant in terms of how Caden views her. It seems to me that Caden doesn't actually feel a genuine connection with her,and he's merely using her as a placeholder for something that he's missing.
